A Full-Floor Apartment Overlooking Central Park Asks $34.5 Million

For the first time in more than 60 years, a Manhattan co-op that has long belonged to an Israeli-American businessman and philanthropist and his family has come to market, listing on Friday for $34.5 million. 

The Upper East Side apartment is located on the coveted stretch of Fifth Avenue that runs along Central Park, allowing for more than 70 feet of full park views from the living room, the library and the primary bedroom suite, and partial views from the foyer and the three other bedrooms. It was the longtime home of businessman Raphael Recanati and his wife, the late artist Dina Recanati, who bought the unit in 1961.

“The location is considered the ‘Gold Coast’ of Fifth Avenue,” said listing agent Michelle Larsen, of Douglas Elliman, of the apartment’s location between East 75th and 76th streets.

Perched on the 14th floor at the top of a 1925 co-op, the full-floor apartment spans approximately 5,000 square feet. In addition to its four bedrooms, the home has six and a half baths, a laundry room, three wood-burning fireplaces and a private landing off the elevator. There’s a separate entry off the service elevator.

The home still has its original herringbone wood floors, which Larsen said are in “excellent” condition. Though the ornate ceiling details are not original to the building, Larsen said they were added before Recanatis moved in. 

This is the first time since then that the apartment has become available for sale, Larsen said.

Raphael, who died in 1999 at the age of 75, was an Israeli-American businessman, founding the Israel-America Shipping Line, and philanthropist, largely donating to New York’s Beth Israel Medical Center and educational and medical institutions in Israel. Dina, who died in 2021 at 93, was most well known for her sculptures. The home is being sold by the couple’s estate.

The Italian Renaissance Palazzo-style building has 13 units—one per floor—including the late Barbara Walters’s former home, and offers white-glove service. There’s also an in-building gym.
