Phat Jack’s BBQ, which opened in 2008 in north Lincoln, closed the doors to its restaurant — now near 84th and Holdrege streets — on Wednesday.

The restaurant run by Matt and Jackie Burt notified its customer base through a Facebook post.

“After 15 years of service to the Lincoln area, we have made the decision to close our doors. We would like to thank everyone for the support. (heart emoji) The Burt Family.”

The Burts were living in Olathe, Kansas, a suburb of Kansas City, in the early 2000s when Matt, a Lincoln native and a plumber by trade, along with his father-in-law, Tony Mateer, and neighbor Tony Allen formed a competitive barbecue team.

The team named Phat Jack’s finished fourth in the World Brisket Open in 2007 and the following year was invited to compete at the prestigious American Royal Invitational.
