Ministry to review service life limits for public buses – Regulations
he Transportation Ministry has announced plans to “revise” rules on the service life of public transportation vehicles including intercity and tourism buses, following recent accidents.
Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said in a press release on Wednesday that the maximum service life was 25 years for intercity transportation vehicles but 15 years for tourism purposes.
Regulations restricting the age of vehicles are stipulated in Transportation Minister Regulation No. 29/2015 and Transportation Minister Regulation No. 44 of 2019.
Although these limits remained relevant, they needed to be reevaluated, the minister said, considering the increasing number of accidents, pollution and other concerns.
In May, a deadly bus accident killed nearly a dozen children on an excursion to Subang in West Java, prompting industry observers to call on the government to impose stricter safety measures on bus operators.
The bus, which was carrying 61 students from Lingga Kencana vocational high school (SMK) in the West Java city of Depok, crashed into oncoming traffic and rolled over on a hilly road in Subang, some 140 kilometers away from the school.
