CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WBOY) — Looking for the best place for a sweet treat in West Virginia? The West Virginia Department of Tourism has a few recommendations.

Here’s WV Tourism’s list of the best ice cream adventures in the Mountain State (locations closest to Clarksburg are listed first).

The Poky Dot – Fairmont

Fairmont’s Poky Dot is known for its crazy ice cream displays and unique atmosphere. Where else can you get a nine-pound banana split? It’s definitely more than just ice cream—it’s a photo opportunity and an unforgettable ice cream experience. It’s also known for its homemade potato chips. Check out photos of the sky-high sundaes on the restaurant’s Facebook and Instagram pages.

Dairy Creme Corner – Fairmont

Located on the east side of Fairmont this seasonal favorite has a line out the door almost all the time. Known for its large menu and even larger ice cream cones, “DCC” is a Fairmont staple. Keep in mind that the restaurant only accepts cash, although there is an ATM on site.

Annie’s Coffee and Creamery – Morgantown

Annie’s is located right off of Interstate 68 in Morgantown, so whether you’re leaving a West Virginia University football game or heading to Coopers Rock State Forest, it’s an easy stop along the way. In addition to ice cream and coffee, it also offers baked goods from Apple Annie’s, a bakery with several locations across the state, including Morgantown and White Hall.

Ellen’s Homemade Ice Cream – Charleston

Perhaps the most famous on this list is Ellen’s which is located in downtown Charleston. Even though its year-round flavors are award-winning, stop by Ellen’s at different times of the year to sample limited edition flavors. See what’s on its monthly menu by checking out Ellen’s Facebook page.

What’s the Scoop – Point Pleasant

Enjoy a scoop overlooking the Mothman statue in Point Pleasant. Although you could just get normal ice cream, you could also try a treat based on a West Virginia cryptid; Mothman, Bigfoot and Sheepsquatch are just a few of the spooky frozen treats offered at What’s the Scoop.

Hanging Rocks Ice Cream – Romney

Located on the Potomac Highlands just outside of Romney, this ice cream shop cycles through different soft-serve flavors every few weeks, giving frequent customers a chance to try something new, but also has a large variety of frozen treats. It’s surrounded by farm scenery, making it a great place to relax with your family.

Austin’s Homemade Ice Cream – Ceredo

With locations in both Huntington and Ceredo, West Virginia, Austin’s markets its homemade ice cream as “deliciously different.” Try unique flavors like dairy-free apple cinnamon oatmeal, lavender honey or grape pineapple.

Creamy Creations – Harpers Ferry

Located within Harpers Ferry National Historic Park, Creamy Creations offers everything from banana splits to shaved ice just a few minutes from some of the most famous and historic sites in West Virginia. Take your ice cream on a short walk to enjoy it with a view of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers.
