Will my child’s school open Monday? Houston-area district updates

The districts said on Sunday, they will start announcing plans for students’ return to classes.

HOUSTON — Several school districts canceled classes on Friday after a powerful and deadly storm moved through the Houston area Thursday. Several schools had damage and lost power. Crews worked through the weekend to assess the damage and restore power. We’re keeping tabs on where districts stand on students returning on Monday.

Editor’s note: Video above is KHOU 11’s storm coverage from Saturday at 6 p.m.

Houston ISD

During a news conference Saturday, HISD Superintendent Mike Miles said that four elementary schools in the district suffered significant damage and dozens were without power. As of 6 p.m., 77 campuses were without power. They said it’s their goal to have all students back on Monday. They said once power is restored to campuses, district crews will check air-conditioning, water and nutrition services.

The district said by noon Sunday, they will begin announcing campuses that will resume classes.

Cy Fair ISD

Cy Fair is assessing their campuses.  They said widespread power outages persist.  They will communicate district plans on Sunday on their website and social media.

Spring Branch ISD

As of Saturday afternoon, Spring Branch said that around 80 percent of campuses didn’t have power. They said power, plus other factors, will determine when they open.  Those factors include air-conditioning, plumbing, phone systems, technology and food service.

The district said it will communicate a decision by 6 p.m. Sunday on its website, social media channels and email/text messages.

As other districts provide updates, we will add them here.

As schools make their decisions, we will send alerts out. Download the KHOU 11 app to receive them.
