53 people, juvenile arrested after ‘illegal’ car show, Worcester police say

Worcester police say 53 people and one juvenile were arrested and charged with trespassing in connection with what authorities say was “an illegal car show gathering.”Police said on Friday, officers responded to several calls from city residents complaining about the car shows and erratic drivers. According to Worcester police, impromptu car shows have been held at a number of locations in the city since the spring.Police say the shows are announced on social media platforms to encourage people to attend. “They are usually held in large parking lots or remote areas where participants can drive recklessly,” a news release from Worcester police said. “These shows have become increasingly problematic, with officers responding to several dozen incidents of gunshots, property damage, erratic driving and large disorderly groups,” police said in a news release. Just before 10 p.m., police say they received reports of a large gathering of vehicles at a lot on New Bond Street. Police said several cars sped off as officers responded but the license plates of some vehicles were recorded.According to police, officers learned that a group had posted gathering spots online with 330 Southwest Cutoff as one of the venues. Police said they arrived at the location around 11:45 p.m. and heard loud music and engines revving. Police said they recognized some of the vehicles from the New Bond Street location earlier in the evening and saw approximately 30 vehicles gathered behind a building.A total of 53 people and one juvenile were detained in the incident, police said. Worcester police said a patrol wagon and a bus were used to transport the people arrested to the police station. Family and friends of the arrestees were allowed to drive their vehicles away from the scene, according to police.”These types of dangerous gatherings put innocent members of our community at risk and will not be tolerated in the city of Worcester,” interim police chief Paul Saucier said. Police said no injuries were reported.
